At what eating occasion was pizza consumed by children and adults?
We continue our analysis of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Surveys Research Group report on the “Consumption of Pizza” in America. This post focuses on eating occasions of pizza consumption, which varies from children to adults.
Independent pizzeria operators should view this report with the mindset: “how can I use this data to better my pizzeria?” Interesting findings about when and where Americans consume pizza may drive you to do the following:
- Evaluate your approaches to carryout and delivery at your pizzeria. According to the study, 59 percent of pizza consumption occurred in the home. Sixty-five percent of adults consume pizza at home, while 49 percent of children eat pizza at home.
- Consider expansion or new emphasis on off-peak day parts. For children, 44 percent of pizza consumption occurred at lunch and 42 percent occurred at dinner. However, for adults, the majority of pizza consumption was at dinner. Do these figures match your sales patterns?
- Take another look at breakfast menus and small plate snack ideas. Overall, almost 10 percent of pizza consumption occurred at a snack occasion.
