One northern Indiana pizzeria not fooled by scam

A scam artist posing as a utility employee called Val’s Famous Pizza in Chesterton, Indiana, demanding immediate payment for a past-due bill or the pizzeria’s utilities would be turned off, according to the Post Tribune.

Scammers are using pretty sophisticated technology to pull off their cons. This person used an app that made Val’s caller ID read the utility company’s phone number. Thankfully, the owner became suspicious when the perpetrator asked for the payment by prepaid debit card. He checked his utility statement online and notified the police.

A good rule of thumb is that any inbound calls requesting payments warrant caution. Never give account or payment information in those instances. Always call or coordinate with bill collectors through their secure online systems.
