London restaurant goes card only

London-based Shrimpy’s, a California/Mexican street food restaurant, has gone cashless. This hip hangout only accepts cards using an app that allows patrons to even split the check, according to the London Evening Standard.

Could cashless restaurants catch on in the U.S.? Split Bread, a small San Francisco sandwich chain, has found success with its two-year-old cashless program. McDonald’s is also testing the idea.

Various estimates suggest as high as 90 percent of customers pay restaurant bills with credit or debit cards. But, are patrons and operators ready to ditch cash all together?

Without any real solid data on cashless programs, there are more questions right now than answers. Can cashless work for pizzerias? And, how do tips factor into the equation? Will credit card processing fees go down?
