Time counts down 13 most influential pizzas in history

Time lists 13 pizzas that have made the biggest impact on the pizza industry. Check out the list and you’ll find the familiar face of Pizza Today’s Man on the Street, Scott Wiener.

Time’s list of most influential pizzas in history include:

13. Hawaiian Pizza — noted for paving the way for unique flavor combinations

12. Mast’Nicola — a 17-century pie that became a stepping stone to sauce and cheese-based pizzas

11. L&B Spumoni Gardens “Upside Down” Pizza — a Sicilian style pizza founded in Brooklyn is famous for placing the tomato sauce on top of the cheese

10. Pepe’s White Clam Pie — a popular pizza today, the Frank Pepe creation of seafood on a pie was pretty innovative in the 1960s

9. Totino’s Pizza Rolls — began the pizza snack trend found in grocery stores

8. Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust — the cheese-filled crust lead to transformations like cheeseburger- and hot dog-stuffed crusts available in overseas markets

7. Uno’s — the birthplace of the deep-dish pizza in Chicago

6. Shakey’s — credited for being the first fast-food pizza

5. Ed LaDou’s Pizzas — these smaller, non-conventional topped pizzas sparked a gourmet trend, kicking off California-style at Spago and California Pizza Kitchen
