Minnesota Pizzeria Owner Praised by President Obama
During last night’s nationally televised State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama highlighted the efforts of a Midwestern pizzeria owner. Punch Pizza founder John Soranno and one of his employees, pizzaiolo Nick Chute, attended the State of the Union address as special guests of First Lady Michelle Obama.
During the speech, the President pushed business owners across the country to “do what you can to raise your employees’ wages.” Just before delivering that line Obama pointed out that Soranno has voluntarily raised the minimum wage at Punch, which has eight locations, to $10 an hour. That’s $2.75 higher than the current federal minimum wage.
“We are honored to be recognized by the President and First Lady,” Soranno says. “As we continue to grow Punch we recognize that only the most dedicated employees will position us to compete and maintain the highest quality food and the best service in the market.”

A Super Day
Super Bowl Sunday is one of the five single largest sales days in the pizza industry. While the large national players tend to increase sales by as much as 80 percent during the big game thanks to aggressive national advertising, the typical independent experiences an increase of 35-50 percent as well.

Why Employees Quit
When morale sinks, employees walk away. Proper training and a fun environment are two of the largest factors that can prevent such an exodus, experts say.
We recently talked with pizzeria owners, chain executives and restaurant consultants, and what we found is that it all starts with communication. Your employees need clear expectations and the tools to get the job done properly. Do that and you are setting your pizzeria up for success.
