About Us

Pizza Today was launched in 1984 when a pizzeria owner in the tiny town of Santa Claus, Indiana, realized he needed help growing his business. “Surely,” he thought, “there must be a periodical or tradeshow that can give me the type of advice I need to be successful.” Well, he was wrong. So he started a magazine himself, Pizza Today, and brought in the industry’s top consultants and experts to provide the type of critical information you still find in our pages three decades later.

In 2015, the magazine was acquired by Emerald Expositions in San Juan Capistrano, California. Today, Pizza Today, International Pizza Expo and the National Association of Pizzeria Operators offices are located in Louisville, Kentucky.

The magazine has undergone many changes through the years, from redesigns to moving its offices to Louisville. Our latest and most significant improvement is represented right here, on the brand new PizzaToday.com site, complete with video, recipes, an enhanced vendor directory and the ability to open and read each new issue of the magazine on your desktop or mobile device.

Pete LachapellePete Lachapelle

Graduating with a marketing degree from Boston College in 1978, Pete has been in the publishing business since 1979. Having served as publisher on 11 different titles, he has worked for some of the largest trade publishing companies in the country and has focused on the food industry for over 30 years.

He began selling ad space for Bakery Production & Marketing in 1983 and was named publisher in 1988. There, he built the magazine into one of the largest industrial food publications in the country. In 1998, he decided to take on the challenge of redesigning and reorganizing Pizza Today into the magazine you see today. In 2000, Pete was named president of Macfadden Protech LLC, where he is now overseeing International Pizza Expo, Pizza Today, the National Association of Pizzeria Operators (NAPO) and the newly launched School of Pizzeria Management.

Pete is also a founding member of the National Restaurant Association’s newly formed Pizzeria Industry Council. This council’s goal is to increase the success rate of independent and multi-unit pizzerias. Over the next few years, the council will be developing tools and resources for pizzerias to use in order to find solutions and opportunities for their businesses.

Jeremy WhiteJeremy White
Editor in Chief

A graduate of Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, Jeremy has a degree in English/Creative Writing with a double minor in Journalism and Communications/Theater Arts Jeremy says his favorite thing about his job at Pizza Today is “visiting America’s most successful independent pizzerias and discovering what makes them stand out from the pack and then passing that information on to our readers so that they can improve their own businesses.”

Jeremy lives in southern Indiana with his wife, Carri, and their two sons, Caiden and Camden. Outside of work, he coaches an elite-level travel baseball team and enjoys cycling, running, sports, literature and music.

Jeremy’s favorite pizza is an artisan pie topped with spicy soppressata, bacon, jalepeño peppers and pineapple.

Mandy DetwilerMandy Detwiler
Managing Editor & Food Stylist

Mandy joined Pizza Today in 2004 after nearly 10 years in the newspaper industry. She is the company’s managing editor, but other duties include food styling most of the food in the magazine and spearheading the company’s award-winning social media.

Mandy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Murray State University (go, Racers!), in Murray, Kentucky, where she double-majored in Print Journalism and Criminal Justice. She received a Masters of Science degree in the Administration of Justice in 2003 from the University of Louisville.

Mandy has one daughter, Bella. Their Louisville house is also home to three cats and one ancient Lhasa Apso.

Mandy’s hobbies include reading, social media, shopping, serving as her daughter’s chauffeur and anything Walt Disney World.

Favorite pizza? It’s hard to beat a plain pepperoni, but she also enjoys a good buffalo chicken as well. Best pizza ever? Totonno’s in Brooklyn.

Denise GreerDenise Greer
Associate Editor

Denise joined Pizza Today in March 2011 as associate editor. “Sitting down with pizzeria owners in their restaurants to learn about successes is a huge highlight, as well as working with the great team we have in Louisville,” she says.

A graduate of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, Denise has a bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Public Relations with a minor in Speech Communications. Prior to her time at Pizza Today, Denise spent eight years at the Ball State Alumnus magazine, working with every aspect of magazine production.

Denise lives in Louisville. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her partner, John, and their beagle, Kunu. She also enjoys playing in the forest — hiking or biking, walking about with her camera –– and taking in the arts or live music. She tinkers in her workshop with carpentry and art projects. One of her favorite pastimes is finding eclectic shops and restaurants.

Rick spent 20 years in the advertising/branding business, he has been with Pizza Today since 1995. His goal in coming to Pizza Today was to eliminate the magazine’s trade publication “look” by making it look like a consumer publication — employing good, progressive design, typography and world-class photography.

Rick’s favorite part of the job is travel. “I’m an Army brat so I’ve lived all over the world. Travel is in my blood. I also love food. So I really enjoy traveling the country shooting photos of your shops and pizzas. I’ve made a lot of pizzeria friends on the road — it’s great getting to see all of you at Pizza Expo, too.”

Rick lives in southern Indiana with his wife, Sue, and their two pugs. They have three daughters/son-in-laws and four grandchildren.

Outside of work, Rick enjoys cycling, building-flying-wrecking-rebuilding RC model aircraft. “When I was five, I discovered what a library was. The first book I checked-out was a cookbook. Ever since, I’ve had a passion for cooking.”

There’s no doubt what Rick’s favorite pizza is –– he is our resident classic Margherita expert!

Josh joined Pizza Today in 2006. Prior to his time with Pizza Today, Josh worked as an Art Director for several newspapers across the state of Kentucky. A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Josh has a degree in advertising. He says his favorite things about his job at Pizza Today are “the amazing working environment and the great people he gets to come in and work with everyday and, of course, traveling to the best pizzerias in the nation and trying all of their great pies.”

Josh lives in Louisville. Outside of work, Josh enjoys working out, watching his stories, coffee, wine, and spending time with this gang of pets and fiancée, Tyann.

Brent AumanBrent Auman

Brent Auman has represented Pizza Today since 1998. This career spans 36 years in B-to-B marketing communications (starting as a mere youngster), with seven years on the agency side, two years on the client side in industrial marketing management, and 27 years in trade publishing Ad sales/service. A SIU Saluki, Brent holds a BS in journalism and marketing.

“This pizza arena encompasses an amazing universe of people power and winning ideas. To help players capture this market, Macfadden Protech offers a one-stop network of top shelf services that deliver on both operators’ and vendors’ success,” Brent says.

Although his career with Pizza Today and Pizza Expo officially began in 1999, Jerry’s love of pizza began as a youngster buying slices on Revere beach in Massachusetts while walking home from the hockey rink. Jerry’s 25-year career in trade magazine publishing and trade show management experience includes home centers, kitchen and bath dealers and Sporting Goods retailers. Jerry graduated from the University of Lowell and his home and office are based in Orlando, Florida. Jerry lives with his wife Sherralynn, daughters Nicole and Meghan, and three cats.

Stacie DennisonStacie Dennison

Stacie Dennison is one of Pizza Today’s resident veterans — she’s been with the company since 1994! Stacie started her career at the magazine as a temp answering the phones, and eventually worked her way into a sales position. Today, she serves as the company’s sales director for The Marketplace, Yellow Pages, Web and NAPO. She says she is blessed to work at Pizza Today and her favorite thing about her job is getting to know her clients and helping to grow their business in the pizza industry. Her motto: No Budget is Too Small!

Bill Oakley joined Pizza Today and Pizza Expo in 1994 as a financial manager. He has also served in the following capacities: chief financial officer; senior vice president and general manager. Prior to his time with Pizza Today and Pizza Expo, Bill worked for United States Senator Mitch McConnell the U.S. Department of Labor, Stifel Nicolaus & Company, Commonwealth Institutional Investments and Republic Bank. Bill is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, with degrees in Marketing and Accounting. Bill’s favorite thing about his job is producing the “World’s Largest Pizza Show,” as well as the opportunity to meet and work with all the great people in the pizza industry.

Bill lives Simpsonville, Kentucky, with his wife, Ellen, and daughter, Cristin. Outside of work, he’s an avid golfer; sports fanatic and lifelong fan of University of Louisville football, basketball and baseball teams. He also is a car hobbyist, likes to read, listen to music and is an avid follower of thoroughbred horseracing.

Favorite pizza? The classic Margherita, of course.

Bruce was the editor of Pizza Today from 1995-2000 and, after serving in the interim as editor of the monthly Louisville Magazine, returned to the company in February 2011 to work with Pizza Expo. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Minnesota and a master’s in journalism from the University of Missouri.

He and his wife Grace live in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, and have two grown sons. Bruce is an avid reader of current events and not-so-current novels and histories. He enjoys golf, cycling and travel. He’ll still go out of his way to see Bob Dylan in concert.

Trade Show Sales Manager

Bobbie joined Pizza Today in 1999. Initially, she assisted the tradeshow department with event planning. Within three months, she was offered a sales position for Pizza Yellow Pages and Pizza Expo booth sales. Prior to her time with Pizza Today, Bobbie spent three years at a local university performance center booking performance artists and lining up all the necessary labor. She also sold program advertising, and that’s when she realized sales was her thing.

A graduate of University of California, Riverside, Bobbie has a Bachelor’s degree in business. She says her favorite thing about her job at Pizza Expo is “when I finally get to see my customers at various tradeshows around the country — and most especially when they are doing their thing at Pizza Expo, making it happen!”

Bobbie lives in Southern Indiana with her husband, Jack. Outside of work, her favorites things to do include going on vacations at beach resorts, reading light fiction, cooking real dinners instead of eating on the fly, and hanging out doing just about anything with Jack. Bobbie’s newest obsession is her 1 year-old grandson, Eli, and she is also pretty excited about an upcoming granddaughter, Aniston, due January 2014.

Patty joined Pizza Today in 1999 as registration manager. She has since moved into the assistant show manager position. Prior to her time with Pizza Today, Patty worked in the accounting field. She says her favorite thing about her job at Pizza Expo is watching the show come together and working with the exhibitors.

Patty lives in southern Indiana with her husband, Rich, and daughter, Amanda. Outside of work, she’s an avid reader and loves to work in her gardens.
