Employee retention is difficult –– do you know why?

We all know managing a restaurant isn’t a walk in the park. There are a lot of factors stacked against you –– from rising food costs to crazy-high rent and consistency across your brand. One of the most common complaints I hear from operators is in regards to employee management and retention. It’s hard to find good people … and even harder to keep them.

That’s why it concerned me when a friend posted this on social media concerning something she witnessed in the parking of a major chain:

The manager of the (pizzeria name) on Charlestown Road must feel like a real big man screaming at a young employee out in the parking lot in front of a busy road for everyone to see. As if I needed another reason to avoid (pizzeria). – use your office dude. Ugh!

Guys, this went out to hundreds of people. Not only does this give the manager a bad reputation as an employer, but it also gives the franchisee and the chain as a whole a bad name.

When I texted her about the incident, she said: “The kid looked 16-18 tops. Kid had his head lowered like a beaten puppy.” Chances are he’s probably not going to stick around, and that means that franchisee is back at square one.

Do you want this said about YOUR manager and your establishment? Sure it wasn’t done in your dining room, but is your parking lot any better? These are potential customers driving by, and by the sound of it, this franchisee just lost my friend’s business and probably doesn’t even know why.

How in touch are you with your business? Do you know how your employees feel about their supervisor? Are they able to come to you with issues, or do they fear reprisal? If you don’t have your finger on the pulse of your business –– your employees –– you’re probably not going to keep them for long.
