Boston pizzeria owner and developer Doug Ferriman is a two-time Pizza Expo pizza-making champion, a 2014 World Master and the founder of two innovative pizza concepts. He’s still climbing his own personal career ladder, seeking opportunity in niches of his own creation.
Ferriman made his first mark at Crazy Dough’s, a slice business founded in 1999 and based on the concept that eye-catching pizza would fly out of display cases in his heavily trafficked urban locations. With his wife Melissa, he attached the slogan “Artisan Slice Bar” to the marketing of the company and grew it to five locations. Crazy Dough’s offers brick-oven, Sicilian and fire-grilled pies, and is constantly experimenting with new recipes.
This creative approach would keep most entrepreneurs engaged for a career, but Ferriman’s drive to innovate moved him in another direction. He’s now the founder and developer of Oath Craft Pizza, built on the promise that, with a unique crust and cheese-first toppings, it can bake a memorable pizza in less than 90 seconds. He co-developed a quick-cook method that really puts the “fast” in fast-casual. Here’s how Oath Craft’s process works:
OATH PIZZAS COOK IN LESS THAN 90 SECONDS. AND THERE’S NOT A MICROWAVE IN SIGHT. IT’S PART ART, PART SCIENCE, PART HOLY SH*T HOW DID YOU DO THAT. IT’S ALSO PART OF OUR SECRET SAUCE. IF IT WERE SAUCE. BUT IT’S NOT. IT’S MAGIC.
Actually, we have a few. That’s why we invited Doug to give a special seminar on Monday afternoon at Pizza Expo. He calls it Innovation Keeps Me Growing, and he plans to share the high — and low — points of his self-made ascent in the pizza business to kick off our free seminar offerings at this year’s show. We think you’ll want to be there.
When we asked Doug to encapsulate what he’ll be talking about, his enthusiasm for the craft and for sharing his story with others came through.
“Learn how to elevate yourself and your brand through Doug’s 18 years of hard-fought summits and painful pitfalls,” he wrote in describing his presentation. “Hear his firsthand stories and key lessons of pure hustle, innovative mindset, entrepreneurial spirit and tactics that keep you moving UP!”
His talk will help you set your sights high at Pizza Expo 2017.
