Pizza Places that Rock & Pizza Industry Statistics — August 2013

Recent media reports indicate that Little Caesar’s Pizza has pulled ahead of Papa John’s and is now America’s third largest pizza company with $2.9 billion in sales.

West Virginia has 607 pizzerias.

On a typical day in 2013, the restaurant industry will rake in $1.8 billion in sales, according to the National Restaurant Association.

This new fast casual Neapolitan pizzeria offers build-your-own pizzas with nearly 40 toppings from which to choose. Its menu also features classic authentic Neapolitan pizzas — Pizza Margherita, Pizza Bianca and Pizza Marinara –– and signature pies, like the Ricotta with sausage, mozzarella, red onions and San Marzano tomatoes ($11.50) and the Poppa with fresh mozzarella, white anchovies and San Marzano tomatoes ($9). The pizzeria offers a burrata bar with heirloom tomatoes and pesto ($6.50), eggplant caponata ($6.50) or prosciutto with roasted peppers ($8.50). Ciao Baby! offers specialty coffees — likes lattes ($2.75) and espresso ($2.75) — and hand rolled cannoli ($4.50).

Stella Barra’s newest location in Hollywood and its sister unit in Santa Monica are the creation of Chef Jeff Mahin, a finalist in ABC’s “The Taste.” Its menu features artisan and Roman-style extra thin crust pizzas. Highlighted pies include the Shaved Mushroom with Gruyere, melted onions, black truffle, torn parsley, rosemary and thyme ($14.95), Spring Onion & Smoked Bacon with aged provolone, Gruyere, parsley and thyme ($15.95) and Coppa Picante with organic tomato, fingerling potatoes, smoked mozzarella and basil ($15.95). The pizzeria’s weekend brunch is hopping with fruit, breakfast sandwiches and eggs. Fresh pastries and bread are available for carryout at a breakfast counter located at the front of the restaurant.

Big changes have taken place with this Brooklyn pizzeria. Franny’s moved into a new, much larger facility, giving the pizzeria the space to accommodate a private dining room and two brick ovens. The pizzeria recently also launched a lunch menu and debuted a cookbook. Its menu features salumi plates and unique offerings like stuffed zucchini with prosciutto cotto, herbs and breadcrumbs ($13) and fried polenta with garlic scapes, estratto di pomodoro and cresenza ($16). Locally sourcing much of its produce, Franny’s offers nearly a dozen pizzas like tomato, buffalo mozzarella and meatballs ($17) and broccoli di cicco, summer onions, chilies and pecorino marzolino ($18).
