In our March 2002 issue, the outlook for the restaurant industry was bleak. American faced a recession and reeled from the terrorist attacks of 9/11. We reported that 85,000 jobs were cut in September and October. Thousands of restaurants faced closure. Our country was hurting.
Eleven years later, the economy –– and the outlook for our industry –– has improved greatly. We hope those of you that are still doing business are doing more than just hanging in there. What are you doing to improve your bottom line? If you’re not thinking about tomorrow, you’re doing yourself –– and your business –– a disservice.
When visiting a pizzeria, I always ask the operator what their No. 1 challenge is –– and what they’re doing to combat it. In the 10 years I’ve been here, I’ve heard everything from getting customers in the door to marketing and controlling costs. Without a doubt, the biggest obstacle is hiring great people. Once you get them on board, what are you doing to retain them?
