Happy National Pasta Day from the Northeast Pasta Showdown

By Denise Greer

Competition reveals creative pasta dishes

How’s this for timing? The first-ever Northeast Pasta Showdown at Pizza & Pasta Northeast in Atlantic City lands on National Pasta Day. Today, chefs prepared pasta dishes for a panel of judges, comprised of professional chefs. Tomorrow, they’ll put their culinary skills to the test by preparing a pasta dish using a table of common ingredients.

The pasta competition area was electric with culinary passion and innovation. Here are some of the interesting points of note we saw, so far:

  • Squid ink pasta (spectators were surprised and impressed with the unique pasta)
  • Artisan approach to classic spaghetti and meatballs
  • Going an extra step with glazes, reductions and marinades
  • Dishes inspired by entrees from specific regions of Italy
  • Modifying sandwich and pizza favorites in a pasta dish
  • Seafood-paired dishes
