Gemignani wins first place in the Pizza In Pala division and claims twelfth world champion title at the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza in Parma, Italy
(SAN FRANCISCO, CA; April 20, 2016)—Last week pizza maestro, Tony Gemignani of Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, became the first American to ever win top honors in the Pizza In Pala division at the 25th annual World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy and claimed his twelfth world pizza championship.
“I’m beyond excited to take this title home for the U.S. and my team, The World Pizza Champions™,” explained Gemignani. “It was such a surreal experience to hear my name announced and feel the crowd erupt – it was one of the best moments of my life.”
Gemignani named his gold medal pizza the “Don Giovanni,” for his son and built it upon his signature seven grain dough with Tony G 00 Flour, 5 Stagione Blue Flour, Rosso and Soy Flour, central milling spelt, double sprouted grain and semolina. He topped the pizza with ingredients he collected from all over Italy – wild boar prosciutto from San Gimignano, Grande and Aiello Mozzarella, black volcano salt, Stanislaus tomato, Durati Menú Tomato, basil, goat cheese and 30 month Parmigiano Reggiano. The Don Giovanni pizza will make its debut stateside at the end of this month at the flagship location of Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and be available in limited quantity on certain days of the week.
The World Pizza Championship’s (Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza) is held in Parma, Italy each year at the beginning of April. The three day event hosts over 600 pizzaiolos from 20 countries competing in 13 separate cooking and acrobatic categories including Pizza In Pala, Pan Pizza, Pizza Triathalon and the Pizza Classica.
